Located only a few kilometres to the west of Dessau, the rococo Schloss of Mosigkau and its gardens were created from 1752 to 1757.
Generous gifts from her father Prince Leopold I, known as the “Alter Dessauer” or “old man of Dessau,” enabled the unmarried hereditary princess Anna Wilhelmine to have this brilliant ensemble built. This “little Sanssouci” is among the last rococo ensembles to survive largely intact in their original form in central Germany. Its artistic high point is the Galeriesaal or “gallery hall,” a lavishly decorated room where recessed wall sections house famous paintings, primarily by Dutch and Flemish masters such as Rubens, van Dyck, and Goltzius, in a unique baroque hanging style. The idyllic Schlosspark, with its floral parterre, maze and two orangery buildings, is a fine place to linger.
Special feature:
Holiday apartment in the Schloss’s easterly Kavalierhaus.
